An overview of the Jewish choral phenomenon, beginning with New York’s first and oldest Jewish community choir, The Yiddish Philharmonic Chorus, founded in 1922; the Boston Zamir Chorale, founded in 1969; Zemer Chai, the Jewish chorale of the nation’s capitol, founded in 1976, and the Zamir Choral Foundation, founded by Matthew Lazar in 1960. We will learn about Makhelet Hashacher, a world renowned Japanese Hebrew Choir, Joshua Nelson and the Kosher Gospel Singers, the college a capella choir movement, and HaZamir: The International Jewish Teen Choir.
Dr. Alan Mason, Vice President for Special Projects, is Professor Emeritus at Barry University in Miami, Florida, and is a graduate of the University of Miami, where he received the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Vocal Accompanying. Alan is the director of Music at Bet Shira Congregation, Conductor of HaZamir Miami, and a Past President of the Guild of Temple Musicians.
