The Contemporary Jewish Music Composers Award

The BSYCA

This competition, founded by Ben Steinberg and currently chaired by Dr. Alan Mason, is held annually to promote young Jewish composers’ works. The award is one of the few composition awards of any kind which provides the winner with a cash award, a first performance, transportation to the performance, and the possibility of the winning selection being published by Transcontinental Music Publications (TMP).

The BSYCA Competition is funded and managed by the GTM. The Zipser Endowment Fund provides additional funds to offset production and publishing costs for winning compositions. Contributions to the Zipser Endowment Fund are welcomed.

Contemporary Jewish Music Composers Award

In 2025, Dr. Alan Mason and David Shukiar founded the Guild of Temple Musicians Contemporary Jewish Music Composers Award, designed to encourage gifted Jewish composers to create innovative, forward looking, contemporary, experimental, worthwhile, exciting, expressive, and inspiring music that reflects Jewish life.

The Contemporary Jewish Music Composers Award is also intended to encourage audiences to be exposed to new and diverse musical styles and idioms, listen to, perhaps participate in, and above all to value unique Jewish musical expressions of quality which are reflective of its own time.
